| APPRAISALS
I have prepared written appraisals for collectors, estates, universities and other institutions and foundations. Each has been a unique experience, for not only are the coins themselves different, but the focus of appraisals differs as well. Do we need replacement cost for an insurance appraisal, an estate or donation appraisal with the appropriate IRS forms, an update to an existing inventory?
Appraisals can take the form of a one-price liquidation, fair market value itemization, or even an academic catalogue, coin by coin, replete with historical notes. I recently produced a thorough and academic catalogue of donated coins for a college in order that the gift be used for instructional purposes, as well as for public exhibition.
A number of clients have specifically requested in their wills that the estate contact me for the appraisal/disposition of their coins. This is an important inclusion for all valuables, as heirs are sometimes unknowledgeable in the specialty, as well as pressured to exact a quick sale.
The cost of appraisals varies, depending upon the requirements of my services. It is usually figured at hourly rates: one for field work, and a reduced one for work which can be accomplished on my premises, using my extensive numismatic library. During the initial consultation, a ballpark figure will be given for the value of the collection, as well as an estimate for my services. Photographic records can also be a component, easily and quickly produced. Through my own business, and because of close contacts with colleagues and auction houses, I can assist and act as agent in the disposition of collections, assuring top-dollar realization. Each and every transaction for which I have served as agent has resulted in a significantly greater bottom-line amount received by the collector or estate.
I hope you will consider the scope of my professional services and contact me.
